Abdelkarim Sma, Lead Regional Economist, International Fund for Agricultural Development
Mr. Abdelkarim Sma is currently the Lead Regional Economist of the Near East, North Africa, and Europe Division of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), an international financial institution based in Rome whose goal is to empower poor rural women and men in developing countries to achieve higher incomes and improved food and nutrition security. Prior to his current assignment, he was managing several IFAD country programs in the Mediterranean region as well as the transition countries of the former Soviet Union.
Mr. Sma, an expert in agricultural and rural development, joined the Fund after spending about seven years coordinating the international operations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in North Africa. Prior to that assignment, he spent an 8-year stint in a major Tunisian consultancy where he held the position of head of agri-business department. Mr. Sma graduated from the French ‘’Grandes Ecoles’’ as a food industry engineer and holds a Master’s degree in agricultural biotechnologies.
