Muhammad Amjad Saqib, Chairman, Akhuwat
Dr. Amjad Saqib, is the founder of Akhuwat, world’s largest interest free microfinance program. A graduate of American University, Washington D.C., Dr. Saqib was selected for the topmost bureaucratic institution, the Civil Service of Pakistan in 1985. Having stood out as a public servant, he resigned from service in 2003 with the intent to dedicate himself to becoming a social entrepreneur and make a difference through Akhuwat – which was launched in 2001.
Within a short span of time, Akhuwat under his leadership successfully opened 484 branches in 300 towns of Pakistan with over 500,000 active clients and 1,150,000 total beneficiary families. Akhuwat has disbursed more than $ 210 million interest free loans while retaining a phenomenal recovery rate of 99.92%. He is a prolific writer and authored six books and is an acclaimed speaker and has spoken at Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and many other international fora.
Besides Akhuwat he provides volunteer services to many philanthropic ventures. He is vice chairman Punjab Educational Endowment Fund, the largest education fund in Pakistan. Government has appointed him Chairman for Prime Minister Interest Free Loan Scheme. On account of his tremendous contribution, President of Pakistan bestowed on him the coveted Civil Award, “Sitara-a-Imtiaz”. Thomson Reuters and Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank awarded him Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.
